How Goodwill Helps Job Seekers Develop Digital Skills

In today’s technology-driven world, almost every job requires some level of digital literacy. However, data shows that many job seekers lack the computer skills training required to fill these roles. Job seekers of all ages are facing a digital skills gap, especially people just starting their careers or those reentering the workplace.

Surprisingly, even younger generations who grew up around digital technology are struggling to overcome barriers to unemployment related to missing computer skills. While many young people understand the ins and outs of smartphones, they may not have encountered desktop computer applications. In a study of recent college graduates, fewer than half reported having adequate digital skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

Why are digital skills so important?

According to a recent report on digital literacy in the workplace, more than 80 percent of entry and middle-level occupations require basic digital skills training. This includes computer skills like keyboarding and email, as well as desktop productivity tools like word processors and spreadsheets.

On average, jobs that require digital skills pay more than jobs that don’t require digital skills. Having a baseline level of digital literacy helps job seekers stand out in the hiring process and obtain jobs that lead to greater financial stability.
