Professional Pajama Pants? 3 WFH (Work from Home) Wardrobe Tips

What’s in a wardrobe? When it comes to your career, it turns out there’s a lot riding on what you’re wearing!

It seems telecommuting is here to stay after the pandemic, and many people are now wondering how they should dress for work each day. While it’s tempting to stay in your pajamas and embrace the comfy side of working from home, experts say that’s not a smart move.

Studies have shown that how you dress affects how you feel, and that can actually equate to success or failure. Feeling confident in your clothes can lead to changes in your behavior, increased motivation, and better productivity. As it turns out, dressing for success can actually lead you there!

So, how do you set yourself up for productivity while still taking advantage of the comforts of a work-from-home environment? At Ohio Valley Goodwill, we have three tips to help you do just that!

#1: Capsule Wardrobes End Guessing Games!

What’s a capsule wardrobe? It’s an intentionally limited, curated wardrobe that consists of classic styles in neutral colors that can be easily mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. For telecommuting, you’ll want easy pieces that can be swapped out or layered depending on your day. Think simple pieces like white t-shirts, neutral button-ups, simple sweaters, jeans, leggings, cardigans or comfy blazers, and stylish accessories to pull it all together. When you have a classic and reliable capsule wardrobe, getting dressed in the morning is a cinch “” there’s no guesswork, just grab and go!

#2: Lean in to Layers

Whether you’re always cold or always warm, the answer to regulating your temperature so you can focus is layers! With simple jackets, cardigans, zip-ups, or even flannels, you can simply remove a layer or add it depending on how you’re feeling. But the beauty of layers isn’t just about keeping you comfortable. If your day sometimes calls for impromptu virtual calls, having a blazer or cardigan nearby to throw on over your outfit will take your look up a professional notch in no time!

#3: Know Your Day

Speaking of impromptu meetings, much of your work-from-home wear will depend on your job and company culture. It’s important to understand expectations, including whether you’ll be pulled into meetings with little notice. If that’s the case, you’ll want to make sure you’re put together every day so you’re ready when the inevitable call, text, or email comes in.

It’s also important to have a good handle on company culture and expectations. If you work for a financial institution, for example, the expectations for your dress might be more professional and buttoned-up. If you work in the creative space, however, you might be just fine in matching loungewear and a sweater!

The bottom line with any work-from-home outfit is comfort. If your clothes aren’t comfortable, there’s no way you’ll convince yourself to wear them just to impress the family dog.
