Pennies are being phased out

What it means for your next Goodwill visit

As pennies leave circulation, we’re rounding cash totals to the nearest nickel. This keeps checkout fast, simple, and consistent across every store.

The United States Mint and Department of the Treasury have ended production of the one-cent coin. Once current supplies run out, pennies will no longer circulate. Learn more here

As a result, Ohio Valley Goodwill stores will round all cash transactions to the nearest nickel (5¢). This small change helps speed up checkout and keeps transactions running smoothly.

Here’s how rounding will work:

  • Totals ending in 1¢ or 2¢ ? round down to 0¢
  • Totals ending in 3¢ or 4¢ ? round up to 5¢
  • Totals ending in 6¢ or 7¢ ? round down to 5¢
  • Totals ending in 8¢ or 9¢ ? round up to 10¢

If you pay with credit, debit, EBT, or mobile options, your total will stay exact. These digital payments are not affected by rounding.

This update supports national currency changes and makes cash handling easier for our team and customers alike. In addition, it ensures a fair and consistent experience for everyone at checkout.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. Every time you shop or donate at Ohio Valley Goodwill, you help people in our community find jobs, build skills, and thrive.
