May Campus Move-Out: Donate your Dorm Supplies to Goodwill!

May is here, and for college students, that means the school year is officially winding down and coming to an end. As summer break begins, thousands of students are faced with the daunting task of moving out of their dorm rooms or campus housing. For most students, moving back home for the summer means they no longer have a use for the things they’ve accumulated over the school year, like dorm room furniture, electronics, books, and clothing. Often, these perfectly reusable items end up in campus dumpsters or in the trash once the student moves home, where they may take years to break down fully. But instead of tossing these gently-used dorm room supplies in the dumpster, what if there was a better solution? There is””donate them to Goodwill!

Ohio Valley Goodwill makes it possible for college students to recycle responsibly and give a new life to their used items by donating. With a network of 33 convenient donation sites in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, it’s easy for college students to donate their unwanted items and make a greater difference for their community and the planet. Here are some helpful tips for college students moving out of the dorms this May:

Campus Move-Out Donation Tips:

  1. As you clean out your dorm room or apartment, separate your belongings into three piles: one pile for the things you want to take home, a second pile for the gently-used items you don’t need anymore, and a third pile for trash (anything that can’t be reused by someone else).
  2. Place the items from the second pile into a cardboard box, plastic bin, or bag and load it into your vehicle. Be sure to mark any containers with breakable items as ” FRAGILE” to prevent damage during transit.
  3. Drop off the donations at your nearest Ohio Valley Goodwill donation center or store. We’ll take care of the rest!

Once Goodwill receives and processes your generously donated items, they are ready to be sold in our network of 18 retail stores and online at shopgoodwill.com. The revenue generated from the resale of these donated items helps fund Ohio Valley Goodwill’s job training and employment services for individuals with disabilities, helping them find meaningful community employment, earn paychecks, and gain more self-sufficiency. Plus, by ditching the dumpster and donating to Goodwill instead, you’re doing your part to keep reusable or recyclable items from filling local landfills, keeping our communities clean and reducing the impact of waste on the environment.
