Make This Thanksgiving One to Remember with Help From Goodwill!

Thanksgiving is only a week away, and now is the time to start prepping for the busy holiday season ahead! If you’re hosting Thanksgiving celebrations this year, Ohio Valley Goodwill has everything you need to make this holiday one to remember. Here are a few ideas to make your Thanksgiving easy, memorable, and budget-friendly.

Make your own decorations

Skip the expensive store-bought holiday decorations this year and make your own Thanksgiving décor! To decorate your table, fill mismatched jars and vases with fall-related items, like pinecones, faux leaves, pumpkin seeds, or acorns, then top it off with a candle. You can also fill vintage glass bottles with flowers, stems, or sprays to add some color to your table arrangement. Ohio Valley Goodwill stores are always stocked with glass jars, vases, and vintage-style bottles of all shapes and sizes, often for less than $1.00 a piece.

Take family photos

With relatives visiting from near and far, Thanksgiving is a perfect opportunity to capture all the memories with a family photo. However, one of the most challenging parts about planning a family photo shoot is deciding what to wear. Most families like to coordinate their outfits by choosing colors that complement one other. At Ohio Valley Goodwill, you can shop for your entire family all in the same store. This makes it much easier to find stylish outfits that look great and coordinate!

Avoid using disposables

It can be tempting to use disposable plates, cups, and utensils during the holiday season. However, disposables can be wasteful and have a harmful effect on the environment. According to CNN Money, Americans produce 25 percent more garbage during the holiday season! If you don’t have enough place settings for your Thanksgiving guests, consider shopping at your local Goodwill store for extra plates, silverware, glasses, serving ware, and even chinaware. Don’t worry if your place settings are mismatched; alternating colors and patterns can give a charming look and feel to your Thanksgiving table. Not only will you find amazing deals when you shop at Goodwill, but using reusable place settings over disposables is the environmentally-friendly choice!

Start new Thanksgiving traditions

This year, why not start some new Thanksgiving traditions to share with friends and family? One fun idea is to start a ” jar of gratitude.” Buy a large glass bowl, vase, or jar from Goodwill, and then decorate it with a festive ribbon or add letters to the outside with a paint pen. Then, place it in the middle of your Thanksgiving table next to small pieces of paper and pens. Ask your guests to write down what they’re thankful for and put their papers in the jar of gratitude. While enjoying your Thanksgiving meal together, read everyone’s answers aloud. It’s a great conversation starter and a reminder to give thanks all year round!
