Hire Our Veterans: What Former Military Members Can Offer Your Business

Our country’s veterans have made sacrifices for our freedom, but when they transition to civilian life, they often face hurdles to entering the workforce. Only one in four U.S. veterans has a job lined up when they leave the military, according to the Pew Research Center.

Hiring veterans is a way to thank them for their service while also benefitting from the skills they gained while in the armed forces. In honor of National Hire a Veteran Day on July 25, we’re sharing some of the top benefits hiring veterans can bring to a business:

Hard Workers
Members of our military are often expected to work rigorous jobs and hours, sometimes in highly stressful situations. With this experience, returning veterans bring with them a strong work ethic and the ability to work as a team to complete a task. They are often good at staying focused and solving problems on their own. These skills are highly sought after in the job market and could prove to be a great asset to any business.

Cool, Calm, and Quick
Those who have served our country are typically used to long, intense training sessions on complex missions. They’ve been trained to pick up concepts quickly and execute them with precision. Plus, they learn do it all with a strong ability to stay calm under pressure. These are excellent attributes for employees to possess, no matter what industry they work in.

Tax Credits
Hiring U.S. veterans is a wonderful way to show gratitude for their service. It also brings with it the potential opportunity for tax credits for employers. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit, for example, is a Federal tax credit offered to employers who hire specific groups of people who often face barriers to employment, including veterans.

Ohio Valley Goodwill’s Services for Veterans
Ohio Valley Goodwill works each year to help our nation’s veterans overcome some of the challenges they may face after service, including securing meaningful employment. Ohio Valley Goodwill is proud to take part in Cincinnati’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Projects (HVRP), which offers eligible veterans assistance with personalized career planning, job development and placement, and finding safe and affordable housing.

Goodwill also operates a VA funded ” Per diem” residential program, which is a program for eligible veterans experiencing homelessness who are in need of employment assistance and intensive and holistic services in order to achieve long-term self-sufficiency. The goal is to find full-time employment in the Cincinnati community.

Goodwill’s Cycle of Success

The veterans who have bravely and selflessly served our country deserve to be welcomed into civilian life with open arms and career opportunities. While a certain industry or business may be new to them, the concept of hard work is not. Ohio Valley Goodwill is dedicated to helping former military members translate their skills into vocational success, and every time you shop at one of Goodwill’s retail stores or make a donation, you’re supporting Goodwill’s mission to change lives through the power of work. Thank you!
