: A path to a purposeful life
 through community engagement

elizabethElizabeth is a  participant in our CARE Program.  She has previous work experience in areas such as janitorial, food services, and stocking supplies.  However, after suffering and recovering from a serious medical condition, Elizabeth made the personal decision not to return to community employment.

While in the CARE program, Elizabeth expressed interest in activities involving cooking, shopping, going to the movies, singing, and working with children.

Elizabeth began volunteering at a local day care that gave her the opportunity to interact with children and assist the teacher with planned activities.  However, after several visits Elizabeth decided that working with children was not for her.

Through a meaningful discovery process, Elizabeth decided she was open to other volunteer opportunities that would allow her to help others and meet new people.

Barb from the Shiloh Food Pantry states, “Elizabeth always has a smile and is a pleasure to work with. She is always willing to do whatever is needed”.  Barb and Elizabeth have gotten to know each other and they discovered not only do they love volunteering, they also enjoy singing  together.

elizabeth2She now volunteers side-by-side with others in the community and has developed new skills and relationships which have enhanced her self-esteem.

Elizabeth can choose from a wide variety of community  opportunities  including  volunteering, community learning/safety, exploring employment, nature discovery, exercise/creativity, and cultural/rec & leisure which help foster community membership.

Through community engagement Elizabeth is meeting new people, acquiring new skills, and helping others.  She has become a valued member of her community.
