5 Steps to Finding the Right Job for You

Starting a job hunt? There are a lot of factors to consider when determining which job postings are worth the application effort. Simply answering a few questions about your needs will help you to easily sort through the noise and find the opportunities that fit you best!

Here at Ohio Valley Goodwill, we help people determine what jobs are best for them every day. Here are five steps you can use to find the best job for you!

#1. Determine your interests and values.

What do you like to do outside of work? While you likely won’t get paid for your hobbies (although it’s not totally out of the question!), there are ways to align your work with what you like to do. For example, do you love to read? Consider a job at a library or bookstore!

The second question you should ask yourself is what’s important to you in a workplace. Ask about company values and culture during interviews, and consider the answer before accepting a position.

#2. What are your special skills?

Employees are happiest when they feel a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Each of us has special skills, but the secret to fulfillment in the workplace is putting those skills to work. Look for job opportunities that will allow your skills to shine!

#3. Use career exploration to understand what a job entails.

Goodwill encourages the individuals we serve to explore careers that interest them. Sometimes, this includes job shadow and internship opportunities, which allow job seekers to gain first-hand experience of what a job is actually like. Tap into local programs and your own connections to create your own career exploration opportunities!

#4. Consider your lifestyle needs.

We all have lives outside of work. Your job should be a good fit for your lifestyle. For example, if transportation is an issue, you might not want to consider jobs that require you to travel across town. You’ll also want to think about which shifts work best for you, and discuss these things with your potential employer before committing to a new job.

#5. Align your career path.

If you have your sights set on a particular career, choose a job that will help you down that path. Think about the skills you’ll learn on the job and whether an opportunity will move you toward your career goals.
