Why Inclusion and Diversity in the Workplace is Good for Business

March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all aspects of community life.

It’s also a time to increase awareness about the barriers faced by people with developmental disabilities, including barriers to employment. Historically, individuals with disabilities have a much higher unemployment rate than the general population. But like all people, they deserve opportunities to work in the communities in which they live. Meaningful community employment is more than just a job; it’s a chance to earn a salary, achieve greater independence, and create relationships with others.

The benefits of hiring individuals with disabilities extend to employers, too. Studies and testimonials demonstrate that individuals with disabilities make great employees. Plus, embracing diversity and inclusion in the workplace brings benefits not only for the company as a whole but also for its employees.

In honor of National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, here are a few of the many reasons why hiring individuals with developmental disabilities is good for business.

#1: People with disabilities often have a higher job retention rate

Individuals with disabilities tend to stay with their jobs longer than non-disabled workers. For employers, lower turnover means less time and money spent on hiring and training new employees. Employees with disabilities make valuable employees!

#2: Hiring employees with disabilities is good for workplace morale

Companies that embrace diversity and inclusion create a more positive environment for all their employees. When surrounded by reliable, motivated workers, all employees are empowered to be more engaged in their work and increase overall productivity. A more inclusive culture is also attractive to potential employees. Making inclusion a priority is one way employers can tap into new talent pools in the hiring process.

#3: Hiring employees with disabilities can lead to business benefits

Businesses that hire individuals with developmental disabilities may receive several types of benefits. One study found that inclusive businesses saw increased innovation, improved productivity, improved market share, increased customer loyalty, and enhanced reputation. Additionally, businesses that hire people with disabilities may be eligible to receive tax credits or other incentives. All of these factors can translate into a better bottom line for the organization.
