How to Respond to Tricky Interview Questions

You’ve created a resume, applied for jobs, and now you’ve been asked to interview for a position ““ congratulations! As excited as you are to interview for a new job, you might be a little nervous, too. Don’t worry; it’s normal to be nervous, especially if you don’t know what to expect. While every interview is different, there are some standard questions that are commonly asked in most interviews.

Let’s take a look at some of the top interview questions and how to respond to them comfortably and confidently.

” Tell me a little bit about you”

This is often the first question asked in an interview, but it can be one of the hardest to answer if you’re not well-prepared! Before your interview, prepare a ” short and sweet” answer to this question that emphasizes your interests, skills, and achievements. This is an opportunity to demonstrate your positive attitude and friendliness. Let your personality shine!

” What are your weaknesses?”

This tricky question can throw you for a loop if you don’t know the answer. The secret is to be honest, but frame your weakness in a positive light and demonstrate that you’re willing to work on personal development. For example, if your weakness is being shy or nervous when speaking in public, say so! Add that you know it’s an important skill to develop and an area you’d like to improve.

” Why do you want to work here?”

Before your interview, do some research on the company or organization. What interests you most about working there? Do you relate to their mission statement or culture? Do their values align with your own? If so, now is an excellent opportunity to mention this! Having an answer ready for this question will show the interviewer that you’re passionate about the job and being a part of their workplace.

” Do you have any questions for me?”

The answer to this question should always be ” yes!” Asking just one or two thoughtful questions shows the interviewer that you’re interested in the position and working at the company or organization. Ask specific questions such as: ” What is a typical day like for someone in this position?” or ” What do you like best about working here?” Try to have a few questions prepared to ask at the end of your interview.
