- About Us
Regardless of how old you are—preschoolers to adults—the grandparents in your life will always appreciate receiving something personal from you. And with Grandparents Day coming up on Sunday, September 8, now is the perfect time to hunt for the perfect present. If you’re looking for a great place to find “from-the-heart” gifts for the older loved ones in your life, Ohio Valley Goodwill is here to help!
Here are 10 ideas, all inspired by Goodwill store buys, that are sure to bring a smile to your grandparents’ faces this Grandparents Day.
Reading Time. There’s nothing sweeter than storytime with grandparents! Want to create an easy and adorable reading space at Grandma and Grandpa’s house? Shop at Goodwill for a variety of children’s books at great prices, then place them in a wicker basket. Add a ribbon to the basket for a finishing touch. The grandparents in your life are sure to love having more books to add to their collection for when the grandkids come to visit.
Craft supplies organizer. If your grandparent is an avid crafter, shop at Goodwill to find unique containers to fill with craft supplies such as yarn, crochet hooks, knitting needles, and sewing supplies. You can often find trunks, shelves, baskets, and dressers at Goodwill that can be repurposed for various organization purposes.
Picnic in the park. Grandparents Day is a wonderful excuse for a picnic with your older loved ones. Look for a picnic basket and fill it with your grandparents’ favorite treats. Ditch the plastic plates and utensils in favor of more earth-friendly glassware, plates and utensils, and cloth napkins. You can usually find all or most of these supplies at your local Goodwill store!
Clothing and accessories. Of course, Goodwill is the place to find clothing and accessories of all kinds at amazing prices. How about a stylish handbag for your grandmother, or a vintage leather jacket for your grandfather? Because our inventory is
constantly updated with fresh donations, you never know what you might find when you shop at Ohio Valley Goodwill! Looking for something specific? Check out our online auction site, shopgoodwill.com to find brand-name clothing and vintage items for less.
DIY gifts. Feeling creative? Shop at a thrift store like Goodwill to find cable-knit sweaters that can be repurposed into pillow covers with tons of texture. Another idea is to make a DIY candle using recycled wax and glass jars. Simply melt down wax from an old candle and add essential oils for extra fragrance. Pour the hot wax into the jar and add a candlewick. You can even create a new label with a special quote or a picture of your family. Voilà—the perfect gift for Grandma or Grandpa!
Photo frames. If there’s one thing grandparents love, it’s pictures of their family. Create memorable wall “art” by gathering a collection of similar frames (e.g., all black wood) with a picture of each member in your family. Help your grandparents out by including adhesive hanging strips for perfect placement with no wall holes! There’s a virtually unlimited supply of picture frames at your Goodwill store!
Memory box. For a bit of nostalgia, pick up a metal file box from your local Goodwill store. Spray paint the box in your desired color and insert folders with each of the grandkid’s names. Fill the folders with schoolwork, arts & crafts, report cards, and memorabilia for each child. When the grandkids are grown, everyone in the family will appreciate taking a fond look back.
Gardening supplies. For grandparents who love to garden, fill a handled toolbox with topiary plants for a container garden. You can create an herb garden with a utensil caddy or plant herbs in individually-labeled mason jars. Or, find a watering can and fill it with supplies like garden tools, gloves, and seed packets. Your grandparents are sure to enjoy the thoughtful gift!
Cooking kit. Cooking and baking are traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. Put together a cooking or baking kit for grandparents and grandchildren to enjoy together by filling a basket with supplies like a cookbook, aprons, measuring cups, spatulas, and mixing bowls. You can even include the ingredients for a favorite family recipe!
Artwork display. Grandparents can display grandkids’ artwork without taking up space on their fridge with this great use for a recycled curtain rod. Buy curtain clips to hang your child’s precious pieces and adhere rod to the wall for a crafty display that can be easily updated.
