4 Areas to Declutter this Fall Season

The leaves are falling, and you’re preparing to get cozy inside. Fall is the perfect time to get your home in order with a big push to declutter. After all, we’re facing another winter indoors. Don’t you want your living space to feel refreshed before the holidays?

Ohio Valley Goodwill can help you start the cold weather season on the right foot! Here are 4 areas to tackle in your home:

Peek inside those closets!

We all have those items of clothing that we swear we’ll wear again someday. But if an item of clothing hasn’t fit in more than a year, you don’t love it, or it’s uncomfortable, it’s time to say goodbye. Don’t let things take up precious closet space if you’re not going to put them to use. Those items are better off bringing joy to someone else, and they will when you donate them to Goodwill!

Get cooking in the kitchen

Take your empty boxes into the kitchen. Like many people, you might have gadgets or dishes lurking in the back of cabinets that you had good intentions for, but it’s okay if you never ventured into making fresh pasta or churning your own ice cream. An organized cabinet might feel better than the spaghetti you envisioned anyway.

According to the experts, many of us hold on to things in anticipation of the right occasion. So if you’re thinking that the day might come when you want to serve up homemade ice cream, try to come up with alternatives that don’t require hanging on to that one-trick pony of a kitchen tool.

Ohio Valley Goodwill accepts donations of kitchenware and small electronics, so those gadgets won’t go to waste!

Move on to the garage

The garage is an often-overlooked place for decluttering, but it’s also one of the top spots for storing items that just don’t belong anywhere else. Be sure to look through the shelves of old paint and light bulbs for items that you forgot you had. Saying goodbye to items here has an added bonus: Maybe you’ll be able to finally park the second car in the garage, or have more room for your lawn care equipment. Making room for these items now will help you breathe a sigh of relief in the future!

While you’re in the garage, don’t forget that Ohio Valley Goodwill even accepts car donations for our weekly auto auction. If it’s time for a new vehicle, consider how your used car could make a difference!

Haul out your storage space

With the holidays around the corner, you’ll be digging for decorations to help you get in the spirit. Now’s the time to clear out your storage areas so you can be better organized when you’re digging out wreaths, candles, and other seasonal décor. Storage spaces are often out of sight, out of mind, so it’s likely you have items that have been collecting dust for a while. Pack them up to donate, and re-organize the items you choose to keep.

If you haven’t already, make use of plastic tubs and descriptive labels so when it’s time to change out your pumpkins and ghouls for winter holiday decorations, you’ll know exactly what you have without digging through everything you own. It will make one aspect of the holiday season less stressful.

Make a difference when you donate to Goodwill

This fall, when you declutter your home, you can also make a big difference when you donate to Goodwill in Cincinnati! Not only are you making a sustainable choice by donating to Goodwill, but you’re also helping to create jobs in your community.
