May is Military Appreciation Month and Goodwill Salutes Our Military Heroes!

Veteran's Grant postThe month of May has been designated as National Military Appreciation Month by the federal government and Ohio Valley Goodwill is doing its part this month as well as all year long to support our military men and women. National Military Appreciation Month started as a simple idea; to gather America around its military family to honor, remember, recognize and appreciate those who have served and those now serving. At Goodwill, we honor our service men and women every day through our programs and services designed to help veterans to obtain employment and permanent housing in the community.

Annually, Goodwill provides services to more than 900 veterans which include career planning, job placement, and finding housing. Goodwill services include:
•A comprehensive individual needs assessment
•A personalized plan that will address the veteran’s employment history and needs
•A case manager who will assist the veteran with job development and placement
•Assistance in locating safe and affordable housing

Goodwill’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Projects (HVRP) are employment-driven programs designed to provide the supports and assistance needed for eligible veterans to obtain employment, housing assistance and economic stability. Each veteran is assigned a case manager who provides assistance in all aspects of helping the veteran rejoin their community as a fully integrated member.

In addition to the above programs, Goodwill operates the VA Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), which is designed to provide rapid re-housing for eligible veterans in danger of losing their housing or who have just recently became homeless.
•The completion of a comprehensive individual needs assessment
•Development of a plan that will address the employment history and needs of the individual
•A case manager who will assist the veteran with job development and placement
•Assistance in locating safe and affordable housing

One of the community outreach initiatives that the organization supports is what are referred to as “Stand Down” events in cooperation with the Veterans Administration. These events offer the opportunity for veterans struggling with homelessness to receive health care, clothing and access to support services as needed during a one-day community outreach program. The next Stand Down is scheduled for June 10th.
