We can help provide accessibility modifications to people's living and working environments.
The mission of the Assistive Technology staff is to assist individuals in fully accessing both their job and home environments utilizing technology and adaptive equipment in a manner individualized to each person's particular needs. In addition to working with individuals, we often work with businesses and organizations, both as an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) consultant, and also to provide accessibility modifications to their environments.

This service's scope can range from assisting the consumer by purchasing simple adaptive equipment that would increase their ability to function more fully in specific areas, to designing and fabricating equipment to meet the unique needs of the individual. Directed by Dave Tucker, MS in Rehabilitation Engineering, this department works closely with you to not only problem solve around accessibility issues, but also to ensure that you fully understand the purpose and proper handling of any adaptive equipment you may use.

Aspects of our Assistive Technology program include:

  • An individualized assessment to determine your strengths and needs in accessing a certain environment (e.g., work, home, school) or increasing your performance in doing certain tasks. This assessment allows us to then discuss with you various technology options available to meet your needs.
  • If adaptive equipment is needed, our staff will explore whether such equipment already exists. If not, our staff is often able to design and fabricate the needed adaptive device or equipment. Goodwill's Assistive Technology staff also installs equipment and adaptive aids (or requests bids from outside contractors to perform this function), and will provide training to you on the proper use or operation of the equipment. The staff will also follow-up with you after you have been using the equipment for awhile to insure that your needs have been met.
  • Assistive Technology staff can assist with accessing computers, ergonomics, work place and home accessibility, seating and wheeled mobility needs, and can also carry-out ADA accessibility surveys for companies and organizations.
  • Whatever your particular needs or barriers at work, school or home, our professional staff is here to help you find workable solutions. Individuals are referred to our services from various community agencies. Typically, we provide services to individuals sponsored by the following agencies: Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission, County Boards of MRDD, the Veterans Administration, local school systems, and the Bureau of Worker's Compensation.
We are eager to speak with you about how our services can assist you, as well as to answer your questions about funding options for which you may be eligible. Please feel free to contact Dave Tucker, Assistive Technology Manager, at 771-4800 or by E-mail at: dtucker@cincigoodwill.org
